BRAND HIGHLIGHT: PAÑPURI

A phenomenal Thai fragrance brand that has replaced Le Labo & Aesop in my house

It’s pretty rare that you discover and feel so moved by a brand that you simply must compose a love letter to it. Well, today’s the day that I pen that letter to my belovèd: PAÑPURI.

The noise around beauty brands is as loud as ever with new products hitting the shelves every month. Effective social media strategies can reel customers in, but keeping them coming back means having a strong brand ethos, unique products, and excellent consumer experience. PAÑPURI has all of those things. It’s reasonably-priced luxury products have replaced Aesop and Le Labo in my home, and I believe they will do the same in yours.

Last December, my partner and I took a trip to Bangkok before a wedding in Chiang Mai. We stayed at the Dusit Thani (10/10 recommend) which is attached to the Dusit Central Park mall. I went into Bangkok with a hit list of shops (influenced by my Instagram algorithm) that I wanted to visit. While the viral stores did not disappoint, I was most excited by a local brand in the mall attached to our hotel: PAÑPURI.

STRONG BRAND ETHOS

If you’re totally unfamiliar with PAÑPURI, think of it as Thai Aesop. It was founded in 2003 by Vorravit Siripark, who was introduced to fragrance and wellness by his grandmother during his childhood in Thailand. The name ‘PAÑPURI’ comes from a mashup of two words in Pali and Sanskrit (the roots of the modern Thai language). PAN refers to ‘PAÑÑA,’ meaning wisdom while PURI refers to purity. Wisdom and purity go beyond just the name to create a cohesive brand story.

Wellness, according to the brand, is about more than heavily-perfumed, expensive lotion; it’s a holistic practice that promotes balance, tranquility, and unification of the body with the natural world. In this interpretation, self-care is as much about energy and immersive self-reflection as it is about beauty products. This is perhaps the reason the brand offers four spa experiences in Thailand (three of which are in Bangkok). This omnichannel approach promotes a captivating brand narrative that feels interactive, passionate, and sincere. A quick look at the product line and ingredient list backs it up.

UNIQUE PRODUCTS

Referencing the brand’s relationship with nature, it is no surprise that the ingredients are vegan and plant-based, derived from herbs, flower oils, and roots. The biodegradable and cruelty-free products pass the brand’s ZeroList™ (a continually updated index of 7,200+ harmful ingredients). Want some of the highlights? PAÑPURI products contain NO sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, silicones, artificial colors, or micro-plastics.

The scents are crafted with ingredients indigenous to Thailand and Asia. Their three most popular scents (which are currently all sold out online) are Siamese Water (jasmine & mint), Andaman Sails (bergamot, green tea, & nutmeg), and Sacred Santal (sandalwood & orris root).

PAÑPURI fuses Eastern inspiration with modern sciences to create a line of face, hair, and body products, as well as home and personal fragrance. Their top-seller, according to the sales rep I talked to in my most recent store visit, is the ‘BATH & BODY OIL.’ Thai massages are world renown, and for 1,690 THB ($54.40 USD or $425.52 HKD) you can take home a 250mL bottle of beautifully perfumed oil. While PAÑPURI is a brand that boasts tradition, it also offers numerous innovative and unique products. My personal favorite gift to buy for friends is their ‘EASTERN TOUCH’ kit, which contains three mini (30mL) body oils with a teak, gourd-shaped massage tool (1,190 THB, $38.34 USD, or $299.93 HKD) . Another unique product is their line of ‘AMBIANCE SACHETS’ which are bags filled with perfume-infused pumice, clay pebbles, and cinnamomum cassia bark. These pouches are refillable and can be placed in closets, cars, suitcases, or homes to provide a gently diffused fragrance that lasts for months. The sachets are 40g and vary in price from 590-790 THB ($19.01-$25.45 USD or $148.74-$199.16 HKD) depending on the bag design.

EXCELLENT CONSUMER EXPERIENCE

In addition to a compelling brand story and novel product development, a stand-out brand must deliver an impeccable consumer experience. From the website design, store architecture, and packaging, I want tasteful extravagance to ooze from the brand. Intuitive navigation, informative pages, and stylish imagery prove that the PAÑPURI website is well-curated. If you have had the pleasure of visiting this brand in person, you know a PAÑPURI shop is moody, earthy, antique yet current, and highly textural. Chartreuse and burnt orange tones are found on the walls with vintage pottery embellishing the product shelves. Light design is eye-catching and memorable, and the walls of the spaces seem to always curve, creating an organic, inviting atmosphere. The product design, packaging, and gift-wrapping is on par with other luxury fragrance/ skincare brands. (In my opinion, it exceeds many of them). It’s also worth mentioning that the pricing of goods is extremely competitive in the luxury space. (Between us, for the quality, I’m surprised these products aren’t more expensive).

I’ll also mention that PAÑPURI offers an international rewards program called ‘PAÑPURI FIRST.’ There are four tiers of status, which offer varying discounts, rewards, and even complimentary spa experiences!

WHERE TO SHOP?

Now that I’ve officially convinced you to give PAÑPURI a shot, let’s get down to the most important information: where you can shop the brand. Currently, the stores are located in Thailand, Singapore, Macau, and Hong Kong (K11 Musea, B2 level). The website ships to Thailand, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and China.

In December 2024, Kosé Corporation (a Japan-based beauty conglomerate) purchased 80% majority ownership of PAÑPURI. With this investment, I hope the brand continues to expand into additional markets while holding onto the brand’s authenticity.

Until PAÑPURI can be readily found internationally, I sincerely recommend going out of your way to check out PAÑPURI if you’re planning to visit any of the aforementioned countries.

If you do, I’m sure you’ll be ditching your Aesop & Le Labo products too!
