How to score the decoupage pieces for 50% off their usual price
Come early May I know an iconic event is on its way to New York City. And no, I’m not talking about the Met Gala or a hopeful Knicks playoff run. I’m talking about an annual decoupage sale. Only once a year can you shop John Derian’s classic East Village selection for 50% off, and as of today, May 12th, the sale has gone live. Before I get into some of my picks, let me catch you up to speed in case you’re unfamiliar with the Manhattan institution.
WHO IS JOHN DERIAN?
John Derian is an American artist from Watertown Massachusetts who has a particular affinity for antiques. While his passion runs the gambit from furniture to paintings to textiles, Mr. Derian has made a name for himself because of his affection for vintage prints.
Handpainting, collaging, and pasting, John began to sell his decoupage creations inspired from his personal collection of turn-of-the-century images.
WHAT IS DECOUPAGE?
Decoupage is the art of decorating an object (in the case of John Derian, glass) by gluing a paper good onto a surface. It is then protected and sealed with varnish, appearing like the image is hand-painted on the object. The selection available at John Derian includes: plates, cups, trays, lamps, vases, cake pedestals, and more.
WHERE IS JOHN DERIAN COMPANY?
Based in the East Village for over 35 years, John Derian Company stretches across three storefronts with individual specialties. All between Bowery and 2nd Ave, the storefront closest to 2nd holds a variety of soft textile objects like blankets, napkins, scarves and bedding, as well as antique furniture and toys. The middle shop is dedicated to a variety of knickknacks and outdoor furniture. The original shop, and home to the decoupage collection, is located here:

Excluding Mondays, the shops are open daily from 11:30AM to 6PM.
